How can I find an unknown value in a given problem?

Hi, kids. This e-tivity is about using our knowledge and our ability to find information to solve a math problem.
By the end, you'll be able to
  • develop a strategy to solve a problem when a data is missing and support the choices you make.
Average online time: 15 min
Average offline time time: 15 min

TASK
The day there were not buses due to the transportation strike, you decided to go on foot. When you have walked 5/8 of the distance from your house to the school, you stopped to drink a soda. At that moment, how many kilometers were you from the school?

Post your comment explaining how you got the answer.

Hints:
1) Does the problem give you all the data you need to solve it?
2) How can you find all the data?
3) Will a drawing help you figure out a way to solve the problem?
4) What operations do you need to solve the problem?

See you around!

    1 km = 1000 m
    1000 x 8 = 8000- 5000= 3000= 3km
3 kilometers to get to school
    hint:
    1. yes
2.by reading all the question and finding the measure of 5/8 that was in kilometers
    3.no
    4.multiplying and subtracting

    ReplyDelete
  2. 1.No.Because they dont give us the kilometers that is from the house to the school.

2.By looking the measures. Like what distance is the school

3.Yes. Because you can draw all and maybe a numerical line.

4.By subtrction and division. Because you divide:how many kilometer is each piece of the fraction and then you subtract 2 pieces.

    8/8 - 5/8 = 3/8
Would left to school 3/8 of distance.

    1. No, because there are not the kilometers.
    2. Know the distance in kilometers.
    3. No, because there are not the kilometers. I can do in fractions.

  11. Answer:
    1 denominator or 1 numerator = 1 kilometer
    5/8 =5 km of 8 km
    1 km x 8 = 8 - 5 = 3 = 3 km
There are 3 kilometers to get to the school.
    Hints:
    1)no
2)Saiyng that 1 denominator or 1 numerator = 1 kilometer and reading good the problem
    3)No
4)By multipliyng 1 km by the denominator(8) and then subtracting the answer by the numerator(5).

  17. From my house to the school are 16km
    5/8 I stop to drink a soda
    16 divided 8 = 2
Each piece is equal to 2

from my hose to school 4 km
    5/8 x 4/1 = 20/8 = 2.5
    2.5 + 1.5 = 4.0
there are missing 1.5km to get to school
    hint:
    1.no

  20. from my house to the school there are 8km aprox.
5/8 X 8/1= 40/8 the number up is bigger than the number down so... 8 divided 40 =5 so it's 5km that are the distance that is from my house to the soda place now you.. 8 - 5 = 3 km
I'm missing 3 km to reach the school.
    1) Yes.
    2) By finding the measure of 5/8.
    3) Yes
    4) To rest and divide.

  21. hi miss

The distance from my house to school is 1km
    5/8 x 1/1 = 5/8
    5 DIVIDED by 8 = 0

    the result would be 0

  22. From my house to the school: 5 km.
    5/8 = 0.62m
    0.62 x 5 = 3.1km
    5 - 3.1 = 1.9km
I was 1.9km from the school

    ReplyDelete
  23. 1.No because there not say the kilometers betewen
    the school and the house
2.By looking the kilometers betewen my house and the shool
3.Yes because we can draw a number line.
    4.By subtraction and division

  24. Alethia there are not kilometers from my house to school , so I am going to work with 10, like if there are 10 km from my house to school.
    ANSWER:
    5/8 x 10/1 = 50/8 = 6 = 10km – 6km = 4 km
I’m missing 4km to get to school.
    HINTS:
    1.No.
2.By knowing the distance in km between my house to the school.
    3.Yes.
    4. First you multiply the fraction by the distance from my house to school with a 1 of denominator.Second you subtract the answer with the distance in km.At the end you answer completily.
