Solving problems using either LCM or GCF

Hi, Kids. By the end of this task, you will be able to:
  1. Identify when to use Least Common Multiple (LCM) to solve real life problems.
  2. Invent and solve a problem that can be solved by using LCM.
Average online time: 20 min
Average offline time: 15 min

Pedro goes to the gym every 8 days and has tennis lessons every 12 days. If today, Monday September 27th, he did both activities, when will he do both things again?

Analysis
Well this problem requires LCM since it is about events that repeat over and over.

Procedure
I will find the LCM of 8 and 12
Multiples of 8: 8, 16, 24, 32
Multiples of 12: 12, 24

The LCM of 8 and 12 is 24

Answering the problem
The number I found indicates that every 24 days Pedro does both things. I today is September 27th, 24 days from now will be....

October 21st.
Pedro will do both activities again on October 21st.

YOUR TASK
1) Invent a problem that can be solved by using LCM and solve it.
3) Post your problem, the procedure you used, and a complete answer.
(before posting revise for proper written English)

Prime Factorization

Hi, kids. By the end of this task, you will be able to

  1. Define what prime factorization is, &
  2. Use the factor tree method to find the prime factorization of any number.
Average online time: 20 min
Average offline time: 15 min

Let's review what
prime factorization is.
We can define it as the string of prime factors whose multiplication is the given number.

Let’s use a factor tree to find the prime factorization of 84.

Let's look at the last row, it only contains prime numbers. We have found the prime factorization of 84.

84 = 2 x 2 x 3 x 7

We can also write it down using exponents. The factor 2 repeats twice, so what do we do?

Let's
check this out:

84 = 2 to the second power x 3 x 7

Your job is to pick up any number greater than 50 and post a comment including:

a) the prime factorization of the number

b) in case a prime number repeats twice or more, re-write the prime factorization using powers

See you around :)
