Scale Drawings

Hi, kids. Hope you enjoy this e-tivity as much as I did when designing it. By the end,
  • you will be able to use scale factors to reduce or enlarge a given figure,
  • you will be able to understand what a scale drawing is.
Average online time: 20 minutes
Average offline time: 10 minutes

DEFINING A SCALE DRAWING
A drawing that reduces or enlarges a real one by multiplying all the dimensions (length, width, depth) by a certain amount called scale factor. If the scale factor is greater than 1, the figure is enlarged; on the other hand, if the scale factor is less than 1, the figure is reduced.



EXAMPLE: Fifth graders want to enlarge or reduce FIGURE A.



Carlos decides to enlarge it. He chooses a scale factor greater than 1.
SCALE FACTOR = 10
New length = 5 cm x 10 = 50 cm
New height = 3 cm x 10 = 30 cm
So, Carlos' scale drawing has a length of 50 cm and a width of 30 cm.

Patty decides to reduce it. She chooses a scale factor less than 1.
SCALE FACTOR = 0.5
New length = 5 cm x 0.5 = 2.5 cm
New height = 3 cm x 0.5 = 1.5 cm
So, Patty's scale drawing has a length of 2.5 cm and a width of 1.5 cm.

YOUR TASK
1) Decide whether to enlarge or reduce FIGURE B
2) Choose a scale factor
3) Calculate the length and height of your scale drawing

    My escale factor is 6.

    answer is in lenght is 39 and height 16.8.
