Solving word problems involving fractions

Hi, kids. By the end of this task, you'll be able to:
  1. apply the concept of part-to-whole relationships to solve daily life problems, &
  2. identify how other classmates solve this type of problems.
Average online time: 15 min
Average offline time: 15 min

Below you will find three problems involving fractions. Choose one of them and answer it. Do not forget to explain how you got the answer.

PROBLEM 1: There are 24 hours in a day and scientists tell us that we should sleep for 3/8 of the day. How much time should we spend sleeping?




PROBLEM 2: The National History Museum has collected 125 dinosaurs. George has collected 3/5 of this amount. How many dinosaurs has George collected?



PROBLEM 3: Luis collected 256 transformers mini-toys but lost ¾ of them on his way to school. When he arrived at school, how many mini-toys did Luis have left?

    3/8 MULTIPLIED TIMES 3/3 EQUAL 9/24 AND IN TOTAL ARE 24 HOURS SO, WE NEED TO SLEEP 9 HOURS.

    i choose problem 1:
    i divided 24 between 8 = 3; 24/8=3
    then i multiply 3 times 3 = 9 ; 3 x 3 =9 then we have to sleep 9 hours

    We need to divide the wole and the denominator that is 24/8 =3 and the the answer i need to multuplyed by the denominator that is 3 so it would be 3x3=9 so we need to sleep 9 hours per day .

    I need to divide the number with the denominator and after that the answer is multiply by the numerator

    125/5 : 25
    25x3 : 75

    He have collected 75 dinosaurs

    So i need to divide 8 and 24 that is 3 and then i need to multiply 3 times the numerator that is 3 so 3x3 =9 so we need to sleep 9 hours per day

    I need to see what is the problem so then I need to divide the number by the denominator in this case will be 8 divided 24 so will give me 3 so we need to sleep 9 hours.

    So I draw a rectangle and divide it in 24 boxes and then divide the same rectangle in 8 and color 3 boxes so it represents 9/24. So we need to sleep 9/24 of the day.

    I CHOSE PROBLEM 2 SO 1 YOU DIVIDE 125 IN AND THEY WIVE YOU 25 THEN YOU DO A CHART LIKE THIS 0, 25, 50,75,100 SO YOU COLOR 3 BECCAUSE THE FRACTION IS 3/5 AND THE RESULT IS 75.

    You divide 24%8, it equals 3, so you multiply 3x3 that is 9.
    WE SHOULD SLEEP 9 HOURS.
